The Department of Microbiology at Karolinska Institutet is currently on the lookout to recruit a Doctoral (PhD) student to join Prof Gerald McInerney’s research group.
The selected students will study and work as part of a larger project with a consortium of researchers at Karolinska Institutet and Umeå University.
The research focuses on the cell biology of virus infection, with a particular interest in alphaviruses, including chikungunya virus.

Position Description – PhD in Molecular Virology
The selected candidates will study at the GM laboratory and collaborate with researchers at Umeå University.
For this project, they will use cutting-edge technologies from proteomics, structural biology, biochemistry, and computational biology to investigate the viral and cellular components of viral ROs.
This project’s investigation will offer distinctive insights into the composition and operation of viral ROs, a crucial field in virology.
Virology, molecular and cell biology, proteomics, and protein engineering will all be thoroughly understood.
Qualifications For PhD in Molecular Virology
To participate in this PhD position at Karolinska Institutet, you must meet the following requirements:
- You must have a second-cycle/advanced/master’s qualification (e.g., master’s degree),
- Must have completed at least 240 credits of advanced/second-cycle/master level courses, or have acquired substantially equivalent knowledge in Sweden or abroad. *
- Adhere to the guidelines found on the website, Entry criteria (eligibility) for doctorate education.
- Demonstrate the level of English ability required for the English B/English 6 course at a Swedish upper secondary school.
- Be an extremely driven applicant with a passion for cell biology and virology.
- Possess documented expertise in one or more of the following fields: computational biology, virology, cell biology, biochemistry, molecular biology, and proteomics.
- Have a strong sense of self-motivation, curiosity, and creativity, and take great satisfaction in the conception and execution of their experiments.

About Prof Gerald McInerney
Gerald McInerney is an Associate Professor of Virology at Karolinska Institutet. He has worked at The Pirbright Institute, Karolinska Institutet, and Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine.
Prof McInerney graduated from University College Dublin with a Bachelor of Science in Microbiology with a wide range of expertise in fields such as biochemistry, molecular biology, cell biology, life sciences, and cell culture.
