Position Description – MS & PhD Scholarship in Environmental Science

The selected PhD students will conduct research in areas such as catchment hydrology, focusing on hydrological and geochemical transport processes, and land-atmosphere interaction, including the exchange of water, energy, and gaseous compounds between the terrestrial surface and the atmosphere. 

The role of the students may include: 

  • Studying the physical principles governing the flow of water on and beneath the Earth’s surface.
  • Study of ecohydrologic processes characteristic of arid and semiarid regions. 
  • Observing the energy, water, and carbon exchange between the atmosphere and the land surface. 
  • Students will employ useful instruments to make field measurements and perform a range of data analysis exercises. 
  • Introduces current theories of the hydrological response of catchments.

Qualification – MS & PhD Scholarship in Environmental Science

  • MSc candidates must have an undergraduate degree in a relevant field in Environmental Sciences
  • PhD candidates must have attained their MSc degree in a relevant field in Environmental Sciences
  • Candidates must have strong research and writing skills

About Todd Scanlon

Todd Scanlon is an Associate Professor in the Department of Environmental Sciences at the University of Virginia, Charlottesville. His research employs a combination of field, remote sensing, and numerical modeling approaches to address these challenges on a range of geographical and temporal levels.

He focuses on understanding how the hydrological cycle, vegetation processes, and atmospheric dynamics interact, as well as how these connections manifest in terms of nutrient cycling and ecosystem function.
