Position Description – Fully Funded PhD Scholarship in Geography

As a member of the Consortium for Emergency Management Practice and Research Innovations (CEMPRI) at UCF, the PhD candidate will collaborate with Dr. Sanam Aksha on studies pertaining to vulnerability, community resilience, disaster recovery, and emergency management.

Furthermore, a strong and solid background and proficiency in data analysis, writing, and partial analysis are anticipated of the student. They must also be able to work independently and have the necessary experience in developing manuscripts.

The student will have the freedom to create and hone an independent research agenda within these overarching themes that supports and advances the larger objectives of the CEMPRI team.

Qualification For The Fully Funded PhD Opportunity at UCF

Interested applicants must meet the following qualifications criteria for the PhD position at University of Central Florida:

  • Must have a Master’s degree in emergency management, geography, hazard analysis, disaster management, urban planning, public administration, or a closely related field
  • Applicants must demonstrate interest in the aforementioned study fields (emergency management, geography, hazard analysis, disaster management, urban planning, public administration, or a closely related field) 
  • Must have a strong academic record
  • Have drive to carry out high-impact research
  • Outstanding communication abilities both in writing and speaking 
  • Proficiency in both solo and group work is a prerequisite for admission to UCF’s PhD program in public affairs. 
  • Proficiency with additional spatial tools (GeoDa) and GIS software (ArcGIS Pro) 
  • Training in quantitative data analysis methods or techniques 
  • Experience disseminating academic research that has undergone peer review
  • Must meet all the requirements for doctoral admission at UCF

About Dr. Sanam Aksha 

Dr Senam Aksha is a research assistant professor that works at the University of Central Florida’s National Center for Integrated Coastal Research in the School of Public Administration. Application of geospatial analysis and modeling approaches to comprehend the social and physical aspects of catastrophes is one of his research interests.

He has two MS degrees in Environmental Science and Risk and Environmental Hazards, as well as a PhD in Geospatial and Environmental Analysis from Virginia Tech’s Department of Geography.
