Borel Global Fellows Program The Borel Global Fellows Program gives financial aid to graduate students whose research is related to one or more of the following objectives:
- Increasing food and nutrition security.
- Further agricultural development.
- Funding rural development in the rural population.
- Cross-purifying the subsistence farmers by promoting wealth and health.
- Enhancing research in Sub-Saharan Africa.
Students can also practice in a broad field of study in agriculture and life sciences such as crop science, soil science, animal science, agronomy, agricultural economics, food systems, sustainability, nutrition, and rural development.
Qualifications For Borel Global Fellows Program, USA
All faculty members with a majority appointment at Iowa State University’s College of Agriculture and Life Sciences are eligible to apply for partial graduate student support.
To be eligible for the Borel Global Fellows Program, students must:
- Be admitted into a graduate program in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences
- Commit to pursuing a career in food security in Sub-Saharan Africa.
- Conduct the majority of their graduate research in Sub-Saharan Africa.
- Plan to work and live in Sub-Saharan Africa after graduation.
Application Process For Borel Global Fellows Program
The application process is highly structured to ensure strong mentorship and institutional support. Interested applicants should gather and submit the following:
- A cover letter from the major professor, stating the major professor’s promise to provide the remaining funds (usually tuition, fees, and research costs).
- Copy of the student’s goal statement highlighting your commitment to supporting the student’s research in Sub-Saharan Africa.
Note that graduate students may not submit applications directly. Only Iowa State University instructors can submit applications.
Graduate students interested in the program should first secure admission to a CALS graduate program and then discuss Borel Fellowship support with their prospective major professor.
